Training
We provide online and face-to-face courses in research skills and software, to researchers of all experience levels. Our training will enable you to work smarter, and help you produce an outstanding piece of research that will impress your examiners and peer reviewers. Courses are taught by experienced researchers – we don’t just teach research, we’re actively engaged in the process ourselves and understand the challenges involved.
Our online courses are presented live and you can ask the facilitator questions in real time as you learn. You don’t need any special software to attend – just click a link and you’ll be in the course. Face-to-face courses are held in our Auckland office – maximum class size is five participants, so there’s lots of individual attention. Any course can be customised for your organisation or research team – contact us to discuss your requirements.
Can’t make the course date(s)? We can arrange individual tuition, or you can purchase a recording of a previous session to watch at your convenience. We’d like to make it as easy as possible for you to upskill in the areas you need – just let us know what we can do to help!
What people say about our training
As a lecturer I really appreciated how Lyn made us all feel like a group on a journey together during the webinar, even though we couldn't see and hear each other. She did a great job of navigating a group that had a range of NVivo experience, and a range of expectations. I liked every part of the experience - Andrew on the message system; getting to 'put up my hand'; just learning about how to participate in a webinar was great - it was seriously good fun! I really liked that it was quick, snappy, and focussed on some clever stuff I was still trying to work out myself.
When I booked [the online training course] I wondered if it would be value for money, and it definitely is. You can waste so much time and effort without knowing those tips and tricks. I taught myself NVivo with a book from the library but for the more advanced features it’s better to be shown tips by an expert. It helps that you are a researcher who can really vouch for the value of certain software features.
I was a newbie to statistical analysis but gained enough knowledge from the session to begin my data analysis. The accompanying booklet you handed out has been invaluable!! It was an informative, well organised, and non-stressful learning workshop which I will be highly recommending to other postgrad students.
This course has great structure and the ability to watch the recording again is super! I found that the time flew and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to click along on my own sample project and then I could relax on other parts to do later with the recording.
The workshop last week was an absolute highlight for both of us. It was reassuring and inspiring all at the same time. We learned a lot and I’ve already ordered three of the texts you recommended. You are an excellent facilitator, and we enjoyed meeting the other participants. It’s not often we get to just sit for a day and think about methodology. We enjoyed it so much.
Firstly being able to "attend" the course online was a huge advantage for me. The delivery was clear, and went step by step through the process. All questions were answered and even though this was by distance it was as though the tutor was in the room with us and we were all heard and acknowledged. Before the course I was feeling overwhelmed and lacking in confidence as to where to begin my text analysis. This course has cemented the process for me and I have the confidence and assurance now to move on.
Frequently asked questions
You can pay either by credit card or via invoice. If paying online with a credit card, your place will be confirmed instantly and you’ll be emailed a GST receipt once the transaction completes. If you choose to pay by invoice, you'll be sent an invoice by email that you can pay by internet banking (your place will only be confirmed once payment has been received).
Here at Academic Consulting we prefer face-to-face training (we like to see your smiling faces!), but the reality is that busy researchers often don’t have time to attend face-to-face courses. To resolve this, we provide live online training courses so that you can attend wherever you are. All you’ll need is an internet connection and some kind of computer – be it laptop, desktop or mobile device. The courses are run in real time so even though we can’t see you, we can immediately respond to your questions as we go through the course. Still not sure about online courses? Check out our blog post that dispels some myths about online training.
No special equipment is required to attend our courses, but you will need a stable internet connection. If you’re in an open plan office you might like to wear headphones, and if you’re attending one of our software courses then having dual monitors can be helpful (but isn’t a requirement). On the day, simply click your unique link to attend (this will have been emailed through to you beforehand) and this will connect you to the session.
Any of our training courses can be run as a one-on-one session – this can be arranged at a time convenient to you, either face-to-face or online. Contact us to discuss this further. Alternatively, if it’s an online training course you’re interested in, we sell recordings of previous sessions – please contact us if you would like to purchase a recording.
Our face-to-face training is held in our Auckland CBD office – Level 2, Southern Cross Building, 59 High Street. The best car parking option is Victoria Street Car Park (immediately opposite our building), and Britomart is just a 10-minute walk away if you’re arriving by bus or train.
Note that if you’ve enrolled in a face-to-face training course through your University, you will need to contact them directly for venue details.
