Answer

A page break is used when you want to force a new page. For example, you have come to the end of your chapter half way down a page. Instead of continually pressing the enter key and creating many empty lines, you can press CTRL + Enter and a page break will be inserted.

A section break is different but can seem to do the same job as a page break (confused yet?).

A section break contains formatting information such as:

  • Headers and Footers (for example, you could have alternating headers for each chapter)
  • Page setup (for example, margins and paper size)
  • Columns (for example, if you were wanting to produce a 'newspaper style' document)

So, the general rules are:

Use a page break if you just want to start a new page

Use a section break if you want to be able to change one or more of the three items above.
