The basic functionality of NVivo 8 and 9 has remained the same, as has the interface in terms of having a Navigation Vie, List View, and Detail View. However, rather than a menu-based system, there is a 'Ribbon' at the top of your screen to help you locate commands. Other changes include:

• NVivo 9 no longer has folders for Free, Tree, or Case Nodes - there is simply a folder for 'Nodes'.
• Reports have been upgraded in NVivo 9, and a range of 'Visualisations' have been added.
• The casebook has been replaced by 'Classification Sheets'.
• Spreadsheets and databases can be imported into NVivo 9.
• Bibliographic information can be imported from EndNote, Zotero, and RefWorks.
