Answer

Spreadsheets and databases can be imported into NVivo 9, which is excellent for mixed methods researchers - these are called 'Datasets'. A few things to note about this new feature:

  • Datasets are imported in the same way as other internals (choose the Dataset option).
  • Datasets can be viewed as 'Tables' or 'Forms'.
  • Drag and drop coding does not work for datasets (unless you are coding the entire row).
  • Once imported, datasets cannot be altered in any way.

An excellent video on working with datasets can be viewed on Youtube.
